July 4th Car Accident Statistics

When thinking about the 4th of July, most tend to think of fireworks, BBQ’s, and a day off work! What many people don’t realize, however, is that 4th of July weekend is also the deadliest time to be on the road. Every year, hundreds of American’s die as a result of alcohol-related crashes and the Fourth of July has repeatedly ranked as the deadliest holiday of the year, even deadlier that New Year’s Day.

According to an article on FoxBusiness.com, “The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been tracking car crash statistics for a quarter of a century. Fourth of July almost always tops the list. Statistics gathered over the past 25 years show that, on average, nearly 51 percent of all deadly traffic crashes on July 4 are related to alcohol.”

Additionally, the institute looked at accident statistics from 2004 to 2008 and found that on average, 148 people died in motor vehicle crashes on July 4, more than on any other day. A typical day has an average of 114 traffic deaths.
