It’s really, really hard to sell cars. There’s a lot of competition out there for your car-buying dollars, especially when money is tight and consumers are correspondingly tight-fisted. So car salesmen have tried some very creative methods over the years to bring in the customer. These are our five favorites.
#5) Buy a Honda Fit EV and Get Free Auto Insurance
The Honda Fit EV is going to be a very popular car. So popular, in fact, that it’s going to be, quite literally, impossible to own. Only a select handful of states will receive the electric Fits, and those will only be available for lease…with no purchase option. This is due to a mix of manufacturing and demand: Honda’s worried about making enough Fits.
So, to make up for the high lease price, they’re offering free collision insurance for the life of the lease. That will make up for that $389 a month lease price, that’s for sure!
#4) Buy a Pick-Up Truck, Get a Free Assault Rifle
This obviously caused quite a stir when it was first announced, for obvious reasons; but for some people it’s an unbeatable deal. Back in 2009, Max Motors Dealership of Butler, Kansas, offered a voucher for a free AK-47 assault rifle. Needless to say, it drew a lot of attention, not least because, well, Butler, Kansas is about as far from the kind of place where people need assault rifles on a daily basis as you can get.
#3) Buy a Car, Get Some Free Gas
Gas prices drive car sales. It’s something dealers have known and struggled with for decades. Some dealers simply decide to cut out the middleman and sell you not just the car, but give you some gas to go with it.
It’s not always the best deal, of course. You’ll need to keep an eye out for stipulations over what gas stations you can visit, and some dealers will even just knock off the equivalent of whatever the cost of 100 gallons of gas is for the overall car. But, hey, if you play your cards right…free gas!
#2) You May Already Be a Winner
This one isn’t a deliberate promotion, but it’s just too funny not to include as a dealer incentive. A Roswell, NM, dealership decided to send out scratch tickets as part of a promotion in 2007. The idea was, of course, people scratch off the cards and see if they won anything. There was a grand prize winner of $1,000.
One small problem: due to an error, all 50,000 tickets mailed out stated that the recipient was a grand prize winner.
Hey, at least it got people in the door!
#1) Buy One, Get One Free
Here’s one you really can’t beat: buy one Dodge Ram pick-up truck, get another one absolutely free. The deal isn’t quite as good as it may sound at first: you had to buy a Dodge Ram Quad-Cab, and you got a Dodge Ram Single Cab free. And, of course, there was a lot of fine print and other conditions. But, for a little while, they really were running a buy-one-get-one-free promotion. Yes, folks, BOGO isn’t just for shoes anymore!
