How to Make Your Commute More Sustainable

It’s no secret that climate change is impacting the future of our planet. One of the biggest contributors to global warming is CO2 emissions caused by our vehicles. One small change we can make in our daily lives that can greatly impact our planet for the better is changing our driving habits. Here’s some tips on how to do so:

  1. Carpool With Coworkers. If you take turns driving to work with coworkers, you can save your money and make better interpersonal relationships!
  1. Slow Down. According to the AFDC, gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 50 miles per hour.  On average for most vehicles, every 5 mph you drive over 50 mph is like paying $0.18 more per gallon of gas! Slowing down will help your wallet and the environment.
  1. Pack your lunch. The AFDC also recommends that you combine your trips. When you pack your lunch from home, it takes away the need to stop somewhere to get food. This decreases your road time and avoids overconsumption of fuel.
  1. Don’t Idle Your Engine. When making stops, turn off your engine. This will save gas when picking up children from school, waiting in long drive through lines, or when waiting for colleagues to join you to carpool!
