Speed. Everyone wants it. Not everyone gets it. And, apparently, most of us can’t afford it, because the fastest, highest-performance cars in the world cost some serious cash. Nonetheless, here are the five fastest cars available now for you to buy, provided you’ve just hit the lottery and don’t care about speeding tickets.
#5) Koenigsegg CCX
Top Speed: 245 Miles Per Hour
One of the fastest cars built by Swedes, the CCX is built almost entirely in-house, using an engine designed internally. It’s also gotten a lot of acclaim: Forbes called it one of the most beautiful cars ever made, and it won the approval of the Top Gear boys as well. And get this … it’s the slowest car on this list. In fact, it’s not even the fastest one from this manufacturer! But we’re getting a bit ahead of ourselves…
#4) Saleen S7 Twin Turbo
Top Speed: 248 Miles Per Hour
Running two Garrett turbochargers, this beast runs at 750 horsepower. If that somehow isn’t enough for you, there’s a performance package that can crank that up to 1000 horsepower. It also has the distinction of being the only car from designer Steve Saleen that wasn’t built on an already-existing chassis. This went out of production in 2009, but there are cars still available for sale, especially to private collectors and people who apparently just need as much horsepower as humanly possible.
#3) 9FF GT9-R
Top Speed: 257 Miles Per Hour
Cost: Over $1 million
If the lines look a little familiar, that’s because this is a Porsche 911 that has been essentially completely rebuilt by German tuning company 9ff. That’s right, they took a stock Porsche, already lightning fast, and made it even faster. The most notable change is that the car is mid-engined instead of the traditional Porsche engine in the rear design. It’s also very stripped down inside; the only real luxury is a roll cage. Considering that this is designed for racing, you’ll probably need one.
#2) Koenigsegg Agera R
Top Speed: 260 Miles Per Hour
Cost: $2.6 Million
This is designed to be a car of the future; the doors even pop out and rotate in a very strange way that looks both highly awkward and incredibly futuristic. Part of the R’s secret is that it’s not powered by gasoline, but rather by biofuel. And in the most recent design, the wheels are made of carbon fiber and the fins are adjusted for more downforce, meaning it may be able to overtake the number one car on this list with the right tires and enough careful engineering.
#1) Bugatti Veyron SuperSport
Top Speed: 267 Miles Per Hour
Cost: $2.4 million
Yes, this costs $2.4 million. And that’s just the start: for obvious reasons, this car gets terrible gas mileage. Auto insurance will be a nightmare, since car thieves want to steal this just to joyride in it. You don’t want to own this unless for some bizarre reason you enjoy going insanely fast. We can’t imagine who that would be.
Now if you’ll excuse us, we’ve got to get to the Bugatti showroom.
