What to Do If Your Car Overheats
Summer is here! And despite what you may think, hot weather is typically not to blame for your car engine overheating. You may not expect your car engine to overheat but it is still best to be prepared. If you do happen to find yourself in this situation, there are steps you can follow to attempt to cool down your engine.
How to be prepared for the unexpected
Don’t wait until you see steam coming out from under your hood. By knowing the warning signs that your car is beginning to struggle, you could prevent the engine from overheating in the first place. Keep your eye on your temperature gauge. If it’s higher than normal, you could have a problem.
You may be able to buy yourself some more time if you notice your car’s engine is beginning to overheat. Turn off your AC as this puts a strain on your engine. Blast the heat to help pull some of the heat out of your engine. If this doesn’t work and your temperature warning light flashes, follow these four steps.
What to do if your car overheats
- Pullover and turn off your engine. It isn’t much you can do for your car at this point. If you continue to drive, you could potentially damage your car’s engine.
- Wait until your engine has completely cooled. This could take at least 30 minutes or more. Do not touch the radiator cap, as a car’s cooling system is pressurized and could send hot coolant airborne. This may also be a good time to call a tow truck, as your car may not be in a drivable condition.
- Check the coolant reservoir. Check your car’s manual to locate this reservoir. It’s typically located near the radiator. If it’s low or empty, refill the tank with new antifreeze. But remember, you should only do this is your car’s engine has completely cooled.
- Check your hoses. Ensure the upper-lower radiator hoses and heater hoses aren’t blocked, disconnected, or damaged. A puddle under your car’s engine could indicate you have a leak.
